This was an enjoyable story, but I've been fortunate enough to beta for Sam and I know she's capable of grab-you-by-the-throat, knock-your-socks-off writing. So I think I might have liked this better if I hadn't yet read anything else by her and gone into it expecting that sort of thing. This is a sweet story with a fun theme (Maker Faire and robots FTW!). But the characters are almost a little too perfect, even with their flaws. And conflicts are resolved a little too quickly for there to be any real tension. This is a good story, but it's not an especially memorable one. It's not an issue of length, as she's written shorter stories that build real tension, culminating in a satisfying climax. I highly recommend checking out her upcoming releases for complex, fascinating, and unforgettable characters whose stories will move you to tears, punch you in the gut, and then have you reading the last page with a happy sigh.
