The Other Guy

The Other Guy - Cary Attwell I loved Emory's sesquipedalian voice, how real and how frail he was. Emory often annoyed me with some of his actions - or inactions - but in ways I found realistic.I love many books with no sex, or fade-to-black sex scenes, so have no objections to that on principle. However, despite clear hints that Emory has always been attracted to men and in denial, I thought his first sexual experience with a man merited more on-page time. I don't need to have seen the act itself, but I would like to have seen some of Emory's thoughts and feelings about it.I also would have liked a better idea of what drew Nate to Emory. Yeah, it was alluded to that for him it was love at first sight. But since I don't believe in love at first sight, it'd be nice to know what kept him coming back for more; especially under the circumstances. That might have been obviated though if we'd seen more of their developing relationship in Chicago, rather than just being told about it.I loved the female characters and various friends, and what very different relationships Emory had with such very different people. That was both realistic and enjoyable. I laughed out loud several times. The end was too abrupt for me, ending at what felt like the middle of the book, so I'm hoping there will be a sequel. Even if there's not a sequel, I'm looking forward to checking out whatever this author next puts out. This was an impressive debut book.
